Create a Mobile App Business Activity (with Free Printable)

Need a creative, free business activity? Students can work through this printable and create their own app based on someone's problem.

It’s fun for kids to dream up apps that they could build to help someone out – not to mention, it makes a pretty great business activity because they’re really working on developing a product.

And that takes a lot of business-think!

Of course, this is the short version – they won’t actually have to go out, do market research, find a problem, develop the app, find a coder, etc.

That would take too long for a short class activity.

Instead, I’ve created a free printable to guide them through the activity in a way that they’ll still use creativity and business skills to do this.

They’ll first choose from one of the 6 problems and people on the sheet, such as:

  • Problem #1: “I can’t remember what supplements, vitamins, and pills to take and when to take them. How can I figure out if I’ve already taken a vitamin for the day?”
  • Problem #2: “I’m trying to get funding for my new company, and need to research, contact, and pitch investors. I’m having trouble keeping track of the network I’m building.”
  • Problem #3: “I’m so tired of all the different streaming services we’re subscribed to. How can I stop having to remember how to sign into a bazillion dashboards and platforms?”

Then, they’ll choose a persona/target customer with the problem.

Lots of variations in how they’ll create the app this way (for example, creating a vitamin/supplement tracking app for a 60-year-old will be different than creating the same app for a 20-year-old).

After they choose the problem to tackle (or you assign it to them), they’ll start to brainstorm and think through what they’d like the app to be in order to solve the problem.

Questions include:

  • What problem(s) does the app need to solve?
  • How much would you like to charge for it, and is your customer likely to pay for the app to fix their problem?
  • If not, then how could you earn money from this app anyway?
  • Brainstorm key functions and features this app needs to have.

Finally, students will work on drawing out the main screens of their app. I can’t wait to see what your students come up with!
