From a fast-growing mushroom kit to a challenging balance board, these gift ideas for boys 8-12 will keep them engaged long after unboxing them.
The problem with most preteen gifts is that they get an initial “wow” during the unboxing…but then end up in the back of a closet (to be found years later after they've outgrown them).

Not so with these gift ideas for boys 8-12.
These gifts will hold their attention, encourage active engagement, and even challenge them.
And they’re a great fit for that tricky in-between stage: no longer a kid, but not quite a teenager yet.
Gift Ideas for Boys 8-12
I've got a preteen boy, and I can tell you that at this age, they generally love to:
- Build AND deconstruct things
- Make things grow
- Research and learn about gross or surprising things
- Test their abilities
- Be ultra comfy, no matter where
Oh yeah – and they ALL want to be rich. All of these gifts take this into consideration.
1. Balance Board

My son was gifted this simple balance board. Not only can he not get enough of it (he even uses it while watching TV – score!), but every time he has friends over, they can't get enough of it, either.
2. Wood-Burning Kit

Do you remember how cool wood burning was when you were in middle or high school?
Well, my son also enjoys the wood burning he's done with this wood-burning kit!
First, they pick out a design and trace it onto a piece of wood (provided with the kit). Then, they burn the design on.
When they get more comfortable, they can create their own designs, too.
3. Figure 8 Magic Ball

I bought a Figure 8 Magic Ball partly out of nostalgia, and partly for my business…and all of my son's friends (including him) have been immediately drawn to it to ask a variation on the same question: will I be rich?
They've got lots of other interesting questions as well.
Seriously – you can see a bit more of what's on your preteen's mind by giving them one of these and seeing what they ask it!
4. Triops/Trilobites

We got a kit to hatch trilobites/triops several years ago, and we've successfully hatched three different cohorts!
My son absolutely loved showing off his triops and talking about them in school. And they only live a few months, so it was a perfect, semi-commitment to a living pet in our home (we also have a senior cat).
Hint: if you want them to grow even bigger? Get some quality fish food flakes. We learned this after we ran out of food and had to improvise.
5. Wearable Blanket
I will never forget the first time I saw a preteen boy with a wearable blank while I was working at a Starbucks.
I knew immediately that my own preteen son would fall in love with one, too!
Hint: you have GOT to see these…I've thought about getting one for myself, too.
6. Duct Tape Designs Book + Duct Tape

If your preteen is anything like mine, then he just loves creating things out of seemingly weird materials.
Like duct tape!
That's how I knew this Duct Tape design book + multiple colored duct tapes was the perfect gift for him this year.
7. Would You Rather Books

These are really fun Would You Rather books that boys love to read aloud to each other and respond to (you should see how thoughtful they get with their answers!).
Great for when adults want to do a simple, engaging activity with their preteen boys as well.
Hint: I also found this pack of Would You Rather cards for just $1.25 at Dollar Tree!

8. Potato Chip Pajama Pants

My son nearly dropped his eyeballs from widening his eyes so much when he saw these potato chip pajama pants (we had gone on the Herr's factory tour together).
You can get your own preteen boy a pair, too! A real winner.
9. Mushroom-Growing Kit

My son requested this mushroom-growing kit from his grandmother last year, and it turned out really well.
Mostly because they grow so quickly! Preteens and kids love quick gratification.
At first, when the pearl mushrooms came out purple-blue, I thought they might be moldy.
But it turns out, that’s all part of the growing cycle.
Look how great they turned out!
10. Harmonica

Let your tween boy try his hand (or mouth) at playing a harmonica.
11. Top Trumps Card Set

I watched this woman on YouTube and saw that her kids had these Top Trumps Cards that she spoke about.
So, I got a set for my child, and he absolutely loves them!
The design of the cards and the information on them is cool enough. But it’s actually a game where you pit each player’s card against the other and see which predator/bug/whatever theme you have would win.
My son is really into the podcast Greeking Out, so these Greek mythology character trumps cards were the perfect gift
I like how there’s something to do with these cards, whether someone else is willing to play with the kid or not.
12. Million Dollar Chocolate Bar

I’ve never met a kid who didn’t tell me they wanted to be rich when they grew up.
Which makes these Million Dollar Chocolate Bars a real winner of a gift.
Classy!
13. NeeDoh

There is a massive trend going on across Virginia right now (is it hitting your area, too?) for these NeeDoh stress relief/sensory balls.
My son's class even read a newspaper article about the phenomenon.
8-12-year-olds want these so badly that they're sold out in all of the stores around here (we've checked Target, Walmart, Five Below, etc.).
I was able to snag one for him at Shein, and it looks like there are still some available.
14. History of Game Consoles book
My son absolutely gobbles up tidbits of historical information for products he's really into, and this game console history book has been one of the best finds for him.
Whether you’re shopping for a birthday, holiday, or just because, this list will help you find something that sparks curiosity or challenges that preteen boy on your list.
