Kid Money System Builder

Kid Money System Builder

Build your system so that it bridges the gap between managing money as a child, and managing their first paycheck.

If you're like most parents, then you're clear about two things when it comes to teaching your kids and teens money:

  • You will NOT send your child head-first into the real world without knowing a lick about managing a paycheck (unlike the sendoff you got as a young adult)
  • You know which way you want your child to get money (either Team Allowance or Team Chore Commissions)

But there’s a disconnect between the Money Lessons you want to pass onto your children, and the ways your child gets to interact with money – there's no clear strategy.

And a half-baked (though well-intentioned) way of getting money into your child's hands can lead to:

  • Your child spending all their money as soon as they get it.
  • Your child lacking motivation to save for anything.
  • Your child buying ridiculous stuff that they later regret.

That's where a Kid Money System comes in.

A Kid Money System (KMS) is:

how you get money into your child’s hands, and the Money Responsibilities, Boundaries, and Rules that money comes with.

And deciding between allowance or chore commissions? Is only a small part of this (in fact, I’d say it’s the most insignificant part).

Hint: EITHER system works, and you can build your Kid Money System around whichever is based on your Money Values (another topic we cover).

You’re going to take your current Kid Money System – the collection of one-off earnings, occasional holiday/birthday money they get, and whatever rules you've established – and make it consistent, intentional, and with a real purpose in mind.

  • Get clear on your Money Values and build your KMS around them
  • Get on the same page as your partner (or co-parenting partner) about what and how to teach your kids money
  • Have a roadmap for how to tweak and change your system as your child goes through the ages and stages of childhood

After the KMS Builder, your child will:

  • Make money decisions within the guardrails you've established, helping them to gain money confidence
  • Get a consistent amount of money they can count on, so that they can start to plan how to spend it and even set savings goals
  • Be clear about who is going to pay for what, (hellooooo Money Boundaries!)
  • Use the Money Challenges Bonus to actively engaged with the new system you just built

“I wanted more information about money systems for kids that can grow with families. After using the Kid Money System, we now know what we want our kids to learn about money.

We have a base allowance set for expected daily contributions, commission chores that can be completed once daily, and project chores that are available to earn once a week. We’re starting Week 3 after setting everything up, and it’s going well!” ~ Rebecca, Mom of a 9 year old, and 5 year old

And the whole thing should take you about an hour. Because I've included some SWEET options for you to pick and choose through, in alignment with what you want in your own system.

“It really is a very helpful plan for parents and kids and goes more in depth than anything else I’ve seen.”

“What I really like about the Allowance Plan and Extension Pack is the idea of Money Responsibilities (other than the buying of random toys at Target). This is a great idea!

We are going to work on implementing this by having her start paying for birthday gifts for her friends and Christmas gifts for the family. When she turns 8, she will get another chore added and another dollar.

I’m going to keep working on this plan with her especially adding weekly giving and Money Responsibilities. It really is a very helpful plan for parents and kids and goes more in depth than anything else I’ve seen. I wish I would have learned all of this as a kid!” ~ Patricia W., 7-year-old daughter

Sondra, Mother to a 7 & 9 year old boys, says,

“A week or so after I got the allowance plan kit from you, we used it to develop our plan. It was really helpful! We'd been on the dole method since they were born it seems. They'd see something in a store, and we'd buy it (and be frustrated that we said yes) or we wouldn't (and often deal with the whining that resulted). With our new allowance plan, they get an allowance of $7 per week plus we do something between Chore Commissions and Consultant-Based Earnings. That is, if I need help with something that I don't want to do at the time or don't have time to do at the moment, I make an offer and we negotiate. Of course, not all of our kid money problems are solved. Next, we'll build in other lessons like…saving for a rainy day, giving to others, etc. It’s so nice to realize how far we’ve come!”
